Heath Hen signed limited edition print
$500.00
“Heath Hen” is the eponymous title of this Ford Times series print. What is a Heath Hen, you may ask – as you surely haven’t seen this extinct bird. It is an extinct bird related to the greater prairie chicken and a reminder that we must be stewards of nature or be condemned to lose it. Issued in 1957 as part of the “America’s Vanishing Birds” series in the Ford Times magazine, this is one of ten prints in the series. This copy is lovingly presented in vibrant color coordinated triple mats in a silver frame. A real conversation piece, this print is signed twice – once in the margin, in pencil, and also in ink within the image.
“He wore the uniform of the Prairie Chicken, but this was a different drummer. The east coast was his booming ground, and he was so common around Boston in the 1830s that appetites jaded on Heath Hen drumsticks. A century later, cornered on Martha’s Vineyard by proliferating people pressure, his band vanished. The last Heath Hen was the first last of a species to be studied in his natural environment, one of our most famous last birds.” – Charley
